4-22-07  I had a truly great experience today. I had the privilege to take Charles Jardine fishing. I picked up Charles from the Shilo Inn this morning and we headed to Jimmy's to pick up a couple items for our day. Charles also wanted to say goodbye to Jimmy and Jim. It was a beautiful morning, which was a huge contrast to yesterday. We headed up to Wolf boat ramp on the South Fork of the Snake. As my friend Bryce and I got the boat situated, Charles put his rods together. I had requested that he show me how to Czech nymph while we were on our trip today. He was more than happy to show me this style of fishing. The first thing we noticed was his rods were a little longer that the typical fly rods we use here in the U.S.. All of Charles rods were ten feet long. Charles couldn't help but laugh, and poke fun at our strike indicators. While Bryce and I drooled over his nymph boxes.  I was amazed how heavy his flies were, I thought a rubberleg was heavy but when compared to a Czech scud, there was a considerable difference.

We stopped at the first side channel below Wolf and got out to fish. I lead Charles to a nice riffle that had a heavy seam in the tail out. He showed me the Czech nymphing technique and I watched him fish for about 20 minutes. In that time Charles hooked a nice rainbow, and some whitefish. He commented on how much he enjoyed whitefish, and mentioned if they were called a silver fish locals would have a different opinion about the good ol' whitey. After a great demonstration Charles handed me the fly rod and asked me to give it a try. After half a dozen casts and missing a lot of fish I started catching on. It took awhile to get the hang of nymphing without an indicator but this style of nymphing proved to be much more effective.

Throughout the day I showed Charles how to nymph, and fish a streamer from a drift boat, but when it was all said and done I was truly the student in and Charles had schooled me. Despite the influx of water flows that day we had a wonderful time. It was nice to get out and fish, and we fished hard. I really learned a lot from Charles and  had a great time fishing with him. I hope to go to England in the near future to join him on some of his local waters, and be schooled again.

Stop by the shop and I will share some more things Charles showed me. By the way we are in the process of getting some Czech nymphing materials in the shop. I will let you all know when they arrive.
